Image Details:

This is Sharpless 240, also called Simeis 147, a supernova remnant in the Taurus-Auriga area of the Winter sky. The supernova which created this expanding shell of gaseous filaments occurred approximately 40,000 years ago and the nebula is currently about 160 light years wide. From Earth, which is 3,000 light years away, this nebula appears over 6 times the apparent width of the Full Moon which places it relatively close to the Andromeda Galaxy in apparent size.
